Spend 3 days and 2 nights in the Peruvian Amazon. Our Hoatzin program takes you from Iquitos to Cumaceba Lodge, a jungle lodge on the Amazon River. You will walk in the rainforest, paddle a canoe at night, go piranha fishing and look for pink and gray river dolphins. A local bilingual guide stays with you the whole trip. Tour Itinerary

Day 1

Iquitos Old Town, Amazon River and Jungle Walk

We pick you up at the Iquitos airport or your hotel. First, we take a short walk in the historic center to see buildings from the rubber boom, such as the Iron House, Hotel Palace, Casa Cohen and Casa Fitzcarrald. Then we go to the pier and board our boat. We sail on the Itaya River and then on the Amazon River, and you will see the bridge over the Nanay River. After about 1.5 hours we reach Cumaceba Lodge, where you get the cabin type you booked. Lunch is a local meal: dorado or catfish, heart of palm salad, rice, yuca and fried plantains. In the afternoon we walk in the jungle to learn about the plants and animals, and you may get the chance to feed squirrel monkeys and pichico monkeys. Dinner is chicken with fried plantains and salad. After dinner, we paddle a canoe on the lake to look for caimans. Night at the lodge.

Day 2

Full Day on the Rio Negro and Piranha Fishing

We start with an early walk to watch birds. After breakfast, we sail on the Rio Negro (Yanayacu means black water in Quechua) with a box lunch on board. On the way you will see riverside homes and many kinds of birds. We fish for piranhas with simple cane poles, the way local people do, and taste fried piranha or other fish we catch. We also take a short jungle walk. This is a great day for photos. We are back at the lodge at about 4 pm for lunch. If the weather is good, you can watch a beautiful sunset. After dinner we take a night walk to look for tarantulas, frogs and insects and to listen to the sounds of the rainforest. Our guide tells jungle stories and myths. Night at the lodge.

Day 3

River Dolphins, Fundo Pedrito and Return to Iquitos

We walk early in the morning to see the jungle sunrise and look for iguanas and birds along the river bank. After breakfast, we search for gray and pink river dolphins. Then we go back to the lodge for a local lunch. In the afternoon we sail back toward Iquitos and stop at Fundo Pedrito. Here you can see paiche (also called arapaima, one of the largest freshwater fish in the world), caimans and the giant Victoria regia water lily. In Iquitos we take you to your hotel by motokar or to the airport by car.
