Our Yagua program is the most complete trip from Cumaceba Lodge: 5 days and 4 nights in the Peruvian Amazon. You get jungle walks, night canoe rides, a full day on the Rio Negro and piranha fishing. You also visit a Yagua community, Monkey Island, a butterfly farm and an animal rescue center. A local bilingual guide goes with you. Lodging, meals and transfers are included.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1

Iquitos Old Town, River Trip and Night Canoe Ride

Your trip starts with pick-up at the Iquitos airport or your hotel. In the old town we walk past houses from the rubber boom, such as the Iron House, Hotel Palace, Casa Cohen and Casa Fitzcarrald. At the pier we board the boat and sail the Itaya River and the Amazon River to Cumaceba Lodge, where you get the cabin type you booked. Lunch is a local meal with dorado or catfish, heart of palm salad, rice, yuca and fried plantains. In the afternoon we take a guided walk in the forest, and you can feed the squirrel monkeys. After a chicken dinner with fried plantains and salad, we paddle a canoe on the lake to look for caimans. Night at the lodge.

Day 2

Full Day on the Rio Negro

We paddle across the lake in the morning to watch birds and look for the hoatzin, a colorful bird that locals call shansho. After breakfast we sail the Rio Negro (Yanayacu means black water in Quechua) with a box lunch. We see riverside homes and native birds, fish for piranhas with cane poles and taste fried piranha or other fish we catch. We also walk in the forest. This is the best day for photos. We return to the lodge at about 4 pm, in time for the sunset if the weather is clear. After dinner we walk in the forest at night to look for tarantulas, frogs and insects. Night at the lodge

Day 3

River Dolphins and Monkey Island

We start with a sunrise walk to look for iguanas and birds along the river. After breakfast we search for gray and pink river dolphins. Then we sail to Monkey Island, where you can see more than 5 types of monkeys, such as howler (coto), woolly (choro), titi (tocon), spider (maquisapa) and pichico monkeys. Some of these species are at risk. After a walk with our guide, we return to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon we look for dolphins again and visit a riverside village. Night at the lodge.

Day 4

Yagua Community and Butterfly Farm

In the morning we canoe on the lake to watch birds and look for the hoatzin. After breakfast we visit a Yagua community. You will learn about their clothing, language, dances and crafts. We return to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon we sail down the Amazon River to a butterfly farm, where an expert explains the full life cycle of butterflies. Back at the lodge, we have dinner, and our guide shares stories of the jungle. Night at the lodge.

Day 5

Animal Rescue Center and Return to Iquitos

After breakfast we visit an animal rescue center, where you can see sloths, anacondas, turtles and some monkeys. We return to the lodge for a farewell lunch. Then we head back to Iquitos and stop at Fundo Pedrito to see paiche (arapaima), caimans and the giant Victoria regia water lily. We take you to your hotel by motokar or to the airport by car.

What is the difference between the 4 day and 5 day tours?

The 5 day tour adds a visit to a Yagua community and an animal rescue center. It is the most complete program from Cumaceba Lodge.
What will I do at the Yagua community?
